How do you think that Baker would respond to a claim that vigilante archivists should be responsible for keeping texts if the government continues to fail to do so? What about the issue of copyright infringement, where the holder of the text might not have acquired it legitimately but nevertheless holds a unique copy? What if this is the last available copy? This argument has been used in the music industry to support filesharing (the distribution of long out-of-print albums) but has been less discussed concerning texts, perhaps because of the scope and scale of infringement. If I were to copy and distribute all the pdfs in JSTOR, which is undoubtedly against their policy, could Baker support my efforts to preserve the texts against corporate control? Do you find this valuable?
